The Kumi Project is a three-module tableware inspired by the life and work of Julia Keilowa. The artist, of Jewish descent, completed her secondary education and studies in what is now Ukraine, and later in Warsaw, providing the foundation for our reflection on this project.
We chose multiculturalism as our theme. Kumi goes beyond practical function. The three modules represent three different cultures (Polish, Ukrainian, and Jewish), which, when combined, create a harmonious whole. Circles replicated within the object form a unifying symbol, emphasizing the value of coexistence and mutual understanding.
The art deco style was conceptualized with a spirit of geometrization and simplification, which are inherent elements of Julia Keilowa's designs.
In the process, the Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) technique was used, allowing for precise shaping of elements from 1.5mm thick aluminum sheet. Alder wood, treated with oil, was used to enhance the object.
